Year Clock: Clock that runs for a year at one winding. The most famous is a spring-driven striking and chiming clock made for King William III, which has had only three owners. A record is kept of all who wind it. Tested in 1950, its efficiency was found still to be much higher than modern clocks. A German firm makes a clock that runs five years on a torch battery. Zaandam Clock: A DUTCH CLOCK made in Zaandam, where clockmakers worked, as well as in Friesland, in the seventeenth century. Zodiac: The band of sky through which the Sun, Moon and planets appear to move. It is divided into twelve angles of 30° known by their 'signs' and sometimes shown on ASTRONOMICAL CLOCKS. |
